Know before you go
Tamarama is a short, deep beach tucked into a gully on the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. The sandstone headlands on either side glow in the early light, and the grassy park behind the sand is a handy place to set up. The surf here is strong, so it’s a beach for photos on the sand and paddling right at the edge, not for swimming with little ones.

The light
Sunrise and the hour after
The beach faces east onto the ocean, so the sun comes up straight over the water and lights the cliffs. By mid-afternoon the gully puts the sand in shade, so this is a morning spot.
Getting there
Tamarama sits between Bondi and Bronte on the Eastern Suburbs coast, about as far east as Sydney goes.

Good to know
“Honestly that just made my week we’ve looked at these 100 times already.”
- Why a sunrise session?
- Tamarama faces the sunrise and loses the sun early in the afternoon, so mornings give the best light and the quietest beach.
- Is it safe for young kids?
- On the sand, yes. The surf is strong with rips, so we keep little ones out of the water and take paddling photos right at the edge with a grown-up close by.
- Is there a travel fee for Tamarama?
- Tamarama is well outside the Hills District, so a travel fee may apply. We’ll tell you when we reply.
We’re based in the Hills District.
